PRINCIPAL CHARITY CLASSIC HELPS HUNDREDS OF KIDS ATTEND CULTURAL PERFORMANCE BY GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING ARTIST
Tournament Funding for Connecting Kids and Culture Program Helps Des Moines-Area Elementary School Kids Attend Creole for Kids at Civic Center
(DES MOINES, IA) – Thanks to funding from The Principal Charity Classic, hundreds of children from Des Moines-area elementary schools enjoyed a field trip to the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines today. The kids were there to see a performance of Creole for Kids and the History of Zydeco by Grammy Award-winning artist Terrance Simien.
Many of the schools used funding from Connecting Kids & Culture, a program funded by donations from The Principal Charity Classic, to pay for bus transportation to and from the event. The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines and Bravo Greater Des Moines combine their donations from The Principal Charity Classic to fund the Connecting Kids & Culture program.
According to Jenny Inman, who teaches third grade at Des Moines’ Brubaker Elementary and whose class attended the show, field trips such as this give kids a whole new perspective on culture. “These kids don’t get these kinds of cultural experiences in their everyday lives,” Inman said. “And a lot of the kids are so involved in their own community that they don’t realize what else is out there. This helps open their eyes up to a whole new world.”
“Donations from The Principal Charity Classic make the Connecting Kids & Culture program possible,” said Kristi Knous, Vice President of the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. “The program gives more than 39,000 elementary school kids in Polk and Dallas counties the opportunity to experience local arts and cultural programming.”
Prior to the performance, Inman’s class took an architectural walk in downtown Des Moines. “This is the first time a lot of the kids have been to downtown Des Moines. They’re doing a lot of things they wouldn’t normally get to do,” said Inman.
About The Principal Charity Classic
The Principal Charity Classic brings the PGA Champions Tour pro golf tournament to Des Moines. The tournament will be played at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa, June 1 – June 6, 2010. Over the last three years, The Principal Charity Classic raised $1.7 million for local children’s charities. The tournament also brings more than $20 million in direct community impact to the Greater Des Moines area.
Hosted by the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, event monies raised will benefit “Fore Our Kids,” a group of five select charities that support Iowa’s children. The five charities are Blank Children’s Hospital; Bravo Greater Des Moines; Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines; United Way of Central Iowa; and Variety—The Children’s Charity of Iowa.
To benefit even more central Iowa kids, The Principal Charity Classic sponsors Birdies for Charity, an additional fundraising effort to supplement tournament-generated proceeds. One hundred percent of the funds generated through the Birdies for Charity program will go to participating organizations.
